“Education has the power to change lives” One of the best examples of this saying is,
the incredible life of Dr. Manmohan Singh He was born in 1932, in a remote village named
Gah The village had no electricity or even proper
roads At that time, his father used to work in Peshawar
as a clerk Few months after Manmohan Singh was born,
his mother tragically passed away The little boy was raised without a mother,
by his grandparents As Manmohan Singh grew up, he was sent to
an Urdu medium village primary school A few years later he moved to Peshawar with
his father and joined Khalsa High School He started loving his new school and saw a
dream of one day becoming a teacher At age 13, he gave his Class 8 common exam
To everyone’s surprise, he not only topped his school, but and also came third in the
whole North-West Frontier Province Then came the year momentus year 1947
15 Year old Manmohan Singh gave his matriculation exam in the month of March
But soon everything changed, partition was announced and riots & unrest
started everywhere At that time, a very sad news arrived, Manmohan
Singh’s grandfather has been killed during the riots
In a panic Manmohan Singh’s father took his entire family to India
That moment when the train crossed the border, like millions, the 15-year-old Manmohan Singh
too was completely uncertain about his future Few months passed, but Manmohan Singh’s matriculation
exam results were never declared Therefore in 1948 he again give the exam
But this time his family didn’t have enough money to even buy textbooks for him
Still, amidst all these odds, Manmohan Singh not only passed the exam, but even got a distinction,
and was awarded a scholarship Later Manmohan Singh joined the Hindu College
and enrolling himself for BA Three years later, when the results were announced,
he stood first in BA economics, and the university awarded him a scholarship for postgraduation
In 1954, he completed his MA, and again stood first in the entire university
He even got a research scholarship from the university with a stipend of Rs. 176 a month
During this time, one of his professor suggested that he should apply for Cambridge, where
great economists like Keynes have studied Manmohan Singh could not afford the expense,
but the Panjab university chancellor agreed that he can carry his university research
scholarship to Cambridge And thereafter Manmohan Singh applied and
was admitted to the prestigious St. John’s College, Cambridge
And finally at age of 23, with a passion to learn, Manmohan Singh took the 12-day ocean
voyage and reached England In college, Manmohan Singh started working
hard, and topped the college, and even won the coveted Adam Smith Prize, the earlier
winner of that prize was the renowned economist Keynes himself.

At age 25, on his return to India, Manmohan Singh fulfilled his childhood dream and started
working as a teacher at Panjab University During this time, he also got married and
had a child Life was going well, but he still wanted to
study more Therefore At age 28, he took a big risk
He left his job, spent all his savings and again went back to England for an interview
at Nuffield College, Oxford There inside the college, he sat there nervously
waiting for the interview to start But by the end of that Interview, Manmohan
Singh was not only enrolled but also got a 659 £ a year scholarship
Later Manmohan Singh completed his Ph.D. in less than two years
After returning from Oxford, his career, truly began.
He started as an economics professor at Panjab University, then moved to New York, to work
with United Nations. Later he worked as a professor at Delhi School
of Economics, then as a chief economic adviser in the Ministry of Finance, then he started
working at the Planning Commission. And then the age of 50, he became the governor
of the Reserve Bank of India Even after all these achievements, Manmohan
Singh’s journey was just starting He later moved to Geneva as secretary-general
of South Commission, then became economic advisor to the Prime Minister of India, and
also became the chairman of the Grants Commission But then something very unexpected happened.
The government changed, and new prime minister P. V. Narasimha Rao sent his Principal Secretary
to Manmohan Singh He told Manmohan Singh that, ‘The Prime Minster
would like you to become the Minister of Finance’ And this is how, Manmohan Singh’s first entered
politics. That same year he presented his first budget,
the also started the process of liberalization of the Indian economy.

Manmohan Singh went on to become, the Leader of the Opposition; and then finally got the
most coveted position in the country He became the Prime Minister of India, and
servred for two full terms In his long illustrious life, Dr. Manmohan
Singh has gained many national and international awards, including the highly respected Padma
Vibhushan But for me his greatest achievement is, that
his life has shown the world how education and hard work has the power to transform anyone’s
